Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP©) offered in Johnston

The Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP©) program will be offered in Johnston in June and July 2009.   CHIP© is a community-based, 8-week lifestyle improvement program that, throughout North America, is dramatically reducing health risks associated with heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

“We are pleased to be able to present our seventh CHIP© program in RI.  During the last four years the CHIP© programs in RI have brought dramatic results!” exclaimed Bill Warcholik, local director of CHIP©.  “The average drop in total cholesterol was greater than 13%.  One person experienced a 27% drop and believes that we helped save his life!”

Dr. Hans Diehl who developed the program was chosen by a national health magazine as one of America’s 20 super-heroes in the health movement:  scientists who “. . . through research, education, advocacy and public relations, have brought intelligent, well-reasoned new voices into the discussion of health care.”

“Everyone is aware of the health care crisis in our country,” Warcholik continued.  “Lifestyle changes taught in the CHIP© program enable participants to prevent and even reverse some diseases while reducing the need for medications.   Of course, we expect participants to work with their own personal physicians as their need for medications decreases.”

   Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP®)

An eight-week (meeting two nights each week), video-based lifestyle improvement program which can dramatically reduce health risks associated with heart disease,
hypertension, diabetes and obesity.  CHIP is changing lives for
the better wherever it is being offered.

The Video-CHIP program consists of the following components:
    1.    Free Information Sessions: Four or five widely advertised, free information sessions are offered a week or two before the program begins. This is the time for interested persons to  ask questions, register for the program, pay their fee and schedule their HeartScreen appointment.

2.    HeartScreen #1: A Coronary Risk Assessment precedes the program.  This is an early morning appointment and includes:
            a.    Fasting lipid profile and blood sugar levels.
            b.    Lifestyle Questionnaire including medical history and medications.
            c.  Assessment of height, weight, frame size, blood pressure and pulse.
            d.    A heart-healthy breakfast.

    3.    Video-CHIP Lecture Series: An educational program which meets for two hours and 15 minutes four times a week, Monday through Thursday, for four weeks or 16 sessions.  It includes video lectures presented by Dr. Diehl, workbook activities, local presentations and a time to sample heart healthy foods.  Participants report their exercise progress on a large map at each session.

4.    HeartScreen #2: This is similar to the first HeartScreen and is conducted at the end of the four-week educational program to measure changes in coronary risk factors and provide clinical feedback.

5.    Graduation: A celebration of progress with a special meal, the HeartScreen results and a diploma, CHIP pin and CHIP knife.

6.    The CHIP Alumni: Graduates of CHIP become members of an alumni organization with regular meetings.  They may attend a future program at a reduced fee.  Alumni are also encouraged to volunteer at future CHIP programs.
